Dua Lipa appears to have embraced her humorous moniker, Dula Peep. In an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Greg James on Friday, the singer touched on the nickname coined by Wendy Williams. As part of the discussion promoting her latest track, “Houdini,” a fan called in to share their thoughts on Dula Peep.
Lewis, a fan of Dua Lipa, expressed his opinion that the name “Dula Peep” would be a better fit for the pop star. Dua Lipa was taken aback by the suggestion, but found it amusing and simply responded with an exclamation of “Ah!”
During an interview with host Greg James, the topic of Dua Lipa’s unique name came up and he mentioned that it reminded him of a classic Wendy Williams moment. He described the name as catchy and memorable. It turns out that the nickname “Dula Peep” originated on The Wendy Williams Show in 2018 when Williams mispronounced the singer’s name. Despite the mistake, the nickname has stuck around and even gained popularity among fans.
During an interview with BBC Radio 1, a fan of Dua Lipa expressed their preference for the nickname “Dula Peep” over the singer’s actual name. The fan explained that the nickname “sounds more fun and it’s cute.” Dua Lipa took the comment in stride, although she jokingly referred to it as a “big diss.” She continued to smile throughout the interview as James, the host, agreed that while Dua Lipa is a great name, “Dula Peep is slightly funnier.”
Lipa concurred with James’ observation that the track had a livelier quality to it, making it sound even more melodic.
Aside from being dubbed as Dula Peep, a TikTok mom made singer Dua Lipa even more viral with her own nickname for the artist – “Lipa Dupa.” Dua Lipa acknowledged the video and laughed along with it.
Lipa previously talked about her name, mentioning that she didn’t mind being called Dula Peep by her fans in 2019. During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, she shared that she was accustomed to having her name mispronounced due to her upbringing in London with an Albanian name. Lipa expressed her desire for a more common name such as Sarah, Hannah, or Chloe, stating that she would gladly accept any of them.
The artist just dropped her debut single “Houdini” as a part of her latest era (which involves her sporting red hair) and upcoming album. This will mark her first album release since her widely acclaimed Future Nostalgia album in 2020. Kevin Parker from Tame Impala and Danny L Harle co-produced the track, which stays true to the disco-pop style that has made the artist famous.
